Discover What's Rich in Richmond |
Richmond Virginia is easy to get to, easy to get around, and as they say, easy to love. Located within a day’s drive of half the US and approximately 100 miles from Washington DC, it’s no wonder why over 5 million people visit Richmond each year.
Richmond offers visitors a plethora of things to see and do. Its 400 years of history is the background from which many of the attractions draw their subject matter. The city itself is an attraction with historical buildings and beautiful architecture all around.
History
Richmond was founded in 1607 and was one of the stages where the revolutionary war played out. One of its most notable pieces of history is Patrick Henrys “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech, which can still be heard from coming from St. John’s church in the summer.
Richmond replaced Williamsburg as the capitol in 1780. While in town you can visit the White House of the confederacy which was recently restored.
If history is what you are after enjoy the endless trail of historic homes, confederacy museums, battlefields, and more.
The River
Richmond is situated on the James River fall line, which provides the area with yet another outlet for fun and adventure. The locals proudly boast that the river is host to the only class III and IV rapids in the area.
What’s great about the James is that while you can rage down the rapids you can also enjoy the calm tranquility of fishing or canoeing here as well.
The river of course has its place in history as well as in the canal. Visitors enjoy the historic canal walk which is both scenic as well as educational, if you’d rather take a ride hop on the canal cruise.
The Arts
The arts are a major part of the Richmond scene. You’ll be overwhelmed with the amount of museums and large collections you’ll have to choose from including an interactive children’s museum. There are also beautiful gardens for the green thumb in your family.
Once you’ve walked the museums step out for an evening of culture. Richmond is home to world class ballet, the opera, and the symphony. Some even housed in historic buildings, thus enriching the experience.
Sports
If sports is what you crave you can get your fill on that too. Richmond is host to arena football, soccer, baseball, and of course NASCAR. Visit the ball park or the speedway to get your fill of competition in Richmond.
Richmond is affordable, accessible, and full of surprises. Come for the day, spend the weekend, or stay for a week, no matter your choice you’ll enjoy it so much you’ll want to come back again and again.
